Leopard Geckos are categorized as Lizards. Lizards are cold-blooded reptiles and belong to the Squamata order. Leopard geckos are four-legged, have visible ear openings and of course movable eyelids.

Size can be from a few centimeters to as long as three meters and more.

Leopard geckos are considered to be very inexpensive pets and perfect as a pet for people who love animals but can not afford an expensive dog or cat.

Keeping a leopard gecko however can quickly get overboard and out of control if not managed the right way.

Depending on the type of equipments, the whole situation can become more expensive than keeping a dog. Keep in mind that the budget can be reduced to a minimum and this is the reason why leopard geckos make such a good pet for people who adore pets but can not really afford to keep an expensive pet. Keeping a leopard gecko is a hobby that can be self researched and does not depend on purchases from the pet store.

The most important thing before getting into the buying phase is to make sure to anticipate one's goals with the pet. It is important to think about the size of the gecko.

Remember the full-grown size of a lizard and this leopard gecko can grow up to six feet long. Do you want a pet of such a size? You have to think about this first before actually buying the pet.

Secondly you have to understand some basic things about the leopard gecko before you make your buying decision. Just know that leopard geckos need extra care and lots of space in order to stay healthy.

Uninformed pet owners should certainly choose a pet that is easier to handle than a leopard gecko. Stay away from the geckos which grow very big if you can not accommodate this kind of sized pet gecko.

My favorite is the leopard gecko which are the smaller sized alternative of its larger brother. A leopard gecko also require less maintenance and care in general.

A leopard gecko does not demand special conditions and attention such as big terrariums with special UV lightning.

Following the leopard gecko closely are bearded dragons. Bearded dragons are easy to keep and maintain but then again they do require a big terrarium with special UV lightning.

So this kind of situation is not great for someone who is on a small budget! In this case stay with a leopard gecko instead.

The investment for a bearded dragon is quite large as well.

Another good option for a small budget are angles and like bearded dragons angles are pretty easy to manage and maintain. On the other hand they need a big terrarium like the bearded dragons. They also require special UV lightning.

Next, let's talk about blue-tongued skins, green angles, fat tailed geckos, Madagascar grounds, Tokay geckos and day geckos.

Know that the bigger the lizard is the harder it becomes to keep them as pets. These types of animals really require large environments. Handling issues and many other factors can be involved with these kinds of animals.

Iguanas are still another option and they are very good pets, but they need a big space along with lots of care and patience. They get sick quite easily.

Other animals that challenge you as a pet owner are chameleons, Savannah monitors, iguanas, white tegu, geckos, and Argentinean blacks.

For most of them, lighting and temperature are very important factor. The temperature of their environment should be an exact match to their natural habitat.

Notice that lizards are cold-blooded and that they require warmth for healthy growth.

In the nature, these reptiles move to habitats where they can find their favorite temperature. They keep out of the sun and live in protected shade. This is the reason why a temperature gradient is a must for these animals. They must have an appropriate temperature in order to stay healthy.

Lizards consume all kinds of different fruits, leaves, insects, and smaller mammals. It is important to learn about what to feed your pet before getting into the actual phase of keeping one.

It is highly recommended that potential buyers should observe the lizard before buying it. Halos be aware that these animals get stressed out with all the traveling. Especially changing environments is not good for them.

You can learn more about the signs that give an indicator of whether the pet is in a healthy condition or not.

Things you can check to make sure the animal is in good condition.

1. Check if the body is fleshy and not flaky.
