    Question New here! Poop question...

LOG IN TO CLOSE THIS AD

Hello! I am new here, this is my first post. I have a question about my new leopard gecko, Frodo's, poop!
I just got Frodo this past Monday. I believe he is about 6-8 months old. He looks very healthy, acts normal, eats quite a bit. He pooped the next morning (Tuesday), and now it is Friday and he hasn't pooped again yet.
He has been eating 8-10 mealworms dusted with calcium w/ d3 (from a bowl throughout the day/night) , and about 3 small crickets, also dusted in calcium, each day (so basically for 3-4 days now). This is my first leo. How often will they usually go? I feel like I have been anxiously awaiting another poop! Everything else with him seems great, that's the only thing I've been worried about.
I have him in a 10 gallon right now. He has a warm hide with a UTH on a thermostat set to 89, reptile carpet for substrate, and a 25 watt regular basking bulb in a fixture over the warm hide during the day and a 25 watt bluish nightlight bulb overnight. Also has a moist hide in the middle and then the cool hide, and then a small water bowl.
Should he have pooped by now?
Thank you in advance for your help!

I should also add that his first poop the day after I brought him home looked normal, not runny or anything like that.

Update: found urate, looked normal. But no poop.

    Hi, and welcome to GU!
The first thing I would have to say is that if I read correctly, you are giving him much too much calcium with d3! This will cause all kinds of problems, and constipation is certainly one of them. I would suggest that you not give any supplements for a few days and see what happens with the poop.

I would also suggest bumping up the temperature on your warm side. It's possible that your leo is not digesting properly and this is the most common cause for that.

If, after a few days of the above suggestions there is still no poop, then a soak may be in order. Use water that is 85 degrees F, as this is the ideal body temperature for a leopard gecko. Put the water in a container deep enough to submerse his body, but shallow enough that he can stand on all four legs and keep his head above water. Be sure to use water that isn't chlorinated, if it is then get some reptile water conditioner from the pet store, be sure that it specifically states on the bottle that it will de-chlorinate!

    Good luck!
    Todd

I did make a mistake up there, I was using just plain calcium without d3 in the mealworms and with d3 on the 2-4 crickets, but I'll stop that for now. And I'll stop all supplements for a few days. What is a good supplement schedule? Because everywhere I read kind of says something different!
And what about the plain calcium in the tank at all times? I did it the first couple of days until I started reading everyone on here saying not to do it. Why shouldn't you? Just curious since most places I've read that you should.
I put the Uth temp up to 89, should I go higher?
I did find poop last night but it was only urate, I know that's not normal but is it okay? I'm hoping for a regular poop soon! If not I will try the warm soak, I have a red eared slider so I have plenty of water conditioner.
Here is a photo of my set up.

That's a 10 gallon but I actually plan on upgrading already to a 20gallon long, probably today. I feel like he's small enough that he has enough room for now but a local pet store is having one of those $1 a gallon sales, and is like to be able to make more room for the hides, so I might as well do it now! The left side is the warm hide (he's spending more time in there since I raised the temp). When I set up a new tank, I would like to make the right side the warm hide so that the heater is closer to an outlet, do you think that will confuse him too much? Or will he figure it out?
    Here he is!

#Hilde is there something going on with this thread? I got an e-mail notification an hour ago that the OP replied, and the count shows 4 even though only 3 messages are displayed. Maybe the new member posts are held up for review or something?

    Thank you,
    Todd

I reposted my response once and then again because it disappeared (which I realized was probably because it had to be reviewed and approved) Then they both appeared in the thread, so I deleted one. Now the one I left is gone again! I did edit it so maybe they need to be approve it again after an edit? I am very confused myself

Ah, I give up. He finally pooped anyway and it looked normal.. What temp should the UTH be set to? I have it at 89 now. I'll slow down with the calcium and d3. How often should it be given? And should I always give plain calcium without d3 every time I feed him?
Upgrading to a 20L today, figured he'd appreciate some extra space!
    Thank you for you help!

Todd, I think to tag someone in a post you have to use the @ sign, like @Hilde

I would set the uth to 93-95 ground temp. Their ideal body temp is 85 and it's good for them to have the ability to move around to areas that are higher enough and lower enough to let them pick their temp as the day and night go by.
D3 should really only be given once a week. Calcium twice a week, and multivitamin powder once or twice a week. There are many varying opinions on this, but I think you'll find majority agreement that d3 every day is way too much.

as to switching which side is hot, these guys are pretty smart, he'll figure it out fast. Some people claim if they don't move tank furnishings around their animals get bored.

The reason many people don't recommend leaving calcium or vitamin powder in the tank is that it's an unregulated supply. Too much of anything can negatively impact health.

I'm glad he did finally poop, I know it can be unnerving when they don't. He looks pretty healthy in the pictures you've included.

    Todd
