Default Cut on a tail -what to do?

LOG IN TO CLOSE THIS AD

I accidentally dropped the top of a hide and it cut his tail (sliced or gouged it). It may also have hurt his left rear leg. Understandably, Jerry is freaking out, tail twitching. Itís late evening here, so canít do anything until tomorrow.

Help! What can I do? Do I need to take him in to be seen? How do I find a good herp vet? Iím in the north suburbs of Chicago.

    Thanks for any help.

It looks like a fairly minor cut. What's that stuff on the floor of the cage? If there's any loose stuff, remove that while he's healing. It's highly likely that the wound will just heal on its own. I don't think you need to take him anywhere or do anything now. Watch for swelling, red streaks in the area of the wound or the wound looking worse. If that happens, take him to a reptile vet. You can find one here: www.arav.org.

Thanks for the response. His current terrarium has a layer of sand under and in the edges around the ceramic tiles (it's a 20gal long). I can move him to another smaller terrarium (10gal) that only has paper towels on the bottom. I move him in there once a week when I thoroughly clean his larger one.

I'll keep an eye on him.

A25BDF8E-191C-4A7D-A5D9-44376DD6181D.jpgso this is what I came home to- half his tail is gone! Iím guessing this is fine. No blood. He also ate three mealworms and is wandering around his smaller terrarium. So no leg issues.

yeah, I was surprised to read that he hadn't dropped it right away. just keep an eye on it and watch closely for infection.

I have an appointment scheduled with a local herp vet on Thursday afternoon. Should I still take Jerry, or let it go and see how he does?

It would be helpfull just to get him checked on by a vet but it is a minor wound but it is always nice to play safe, Its really your choice though.

TAKE HIM IN. That is a big cut, and if it is still attached, there's risk of infection.

I took him in. He’s doing very well. It’s been 24 days and his tail now looks like this. 75D05ADB-6071-42B7-A10D-EA55CC4E8C60.jpg

That looks much better, so glad it is healing up. Did the vet have to amputate, or did the tail fall off on its own?
