Prolapse Problems - PLEASE help!

My gecko Bowie went to a checkup on Wednesday where they removed some rather large sperm plugs. His bottom looked a little irritated but they said he'd be okay and gave me some pain meds. By the time I got home he had prolapsed on one side. So I call the vet back, and drive another hour right back to the vet where they add a stitch to hold him in. I thank them and drive home. I arrive home again to see that he has prolapsed AROUND the stitch on the same side. This time slightly larger. I call the vet again immediately. I tell them I'm not willing to drive back a third time today and they tell me to bring him in early the next morning for potential surgery. The next day comes, we go. They take him, and return with a second stitch and he is all tucked in. No surgery. I'm a little skeptical by now so I drive around town a little before we leave to see if anything happens. He doesn't prolapse again so we go home. Friday he is fine. Saturday he is fine. I wake up today (Sunday) and he is prolapsed again. It looks like he may have bitten the stitches. The prolapse is bigger than ever. My vet is not open again until Tuesday. He is in a moist paper towel tank with a water dish. I have some sterile lube to put on the prolapse from my last visit. I am so worried and so disheartened. I don't want him to die and have no exotic trained emergency veterinary services. With keeping it clean and lubricated, do you think he will be okay until Tuesday morning? I am assuming they will have to operate by that point. In fact, I will insist. I can provide a photo but did not want to NSFW anybody. I am soooooo worried.

You can soak the area in karo syrup, Preparation-H or sugar water, very heavy on the sugar. All these solutions shrink swollen tissue and maybe the hemipenis will go back in. I had a gecko that prolapsed and the treatment worked for a day or two, after which it came out again. The vet amputated the hemipenis. It was done under local right at the office and he was fine.

Keep Bowie's wound lubed. Do your best to keep up the humidity 24/7. Be sure the heat = 88-92 F (31.1-33.3).

Have you been using Bowie's pain meds as prescribed?

This COULD help even post surgery. Have you any soft flexible styrofoam -- the type often used for packing delicate items? I have some 1/16 & 3/16 inches thick.

Fashion a small section into a cone -- like that used for cats and dogs post surgery. Secure it with heavy duty packing tape or possibly heavy duty velcro from a craft/fabric store or Amazon.

Hello! I did see you on the other forum. We did a sugar soak when the prolapse initially reared its ugly head. It was very small then and unfortunately the soak did nothing. It was really disheartening after two good days to wake up and see that again somehow it had not only popped out but was pretty big. This morning it has not changed color and it just slightly more swollen than yesterday. I feel bad that he is potentially in pain despite his meds and that he has to walk around like that or sit down on it. Only 24 hours to go now!

When your gecko had surgery, how did they close up the incision? What was aftercare like? Has the otherside ever prolapsed?

Good morning, I woke up today and gave him a warm soak. After which he gets his Meloxicam and I lubricate the hemipene. I have been dosing as prescribed yes, though admittedly there was a day he looked really rough and I gave him a half dose later in the day. The humidity in his box is probably about 60% and the temperature is 85. It doesn't seem any worse than it already is. I hope it doesn't hurt too badly either. It must suck to have nothing to do but sit around a plain tank in a hide and just...be sick. I hope that when they operate he is in a better state..

As for the gecko cone LOL... do they not take it off? I'd be worried he'd remove it and eat some. He is a moss eating brat. His initial appointment was for moss eating and lack of appetite. (He wasn't impacted. Vet said he looked great other than the sperm plugs.)

Was your initial soak in sugar water super high in sugar content as Aliza suggests?

IF you discovered a decent way to keep a cone in place, that might be worth trying. Bowie's surgery may also involve stitches.

It was about a half a cup of sugar in an inch of water as big as a shoebox. It was borrowed sugar or I would try again. Ironically a sugar free household so I also have no honey on hand. I just disturbed him for his lubing and it looks about the same, but that's still better than worse. Surgery makes me feel like a bad gecko mom, but at least it won't happen again. Before he came to live with me, he lived with my sister and had never been to a vet at all. He's been back here for about 6 months now. Could big stuck sperm plugs have stopped him eating? I bought Repta-Boost and Carnivore Care in preparation of a stubborn eater in recovery. It can't be good to take in meds without food. Here's a photo so y'all know I'm not some gecko menace, lol.

I believe that the vet who did the surgery on my gecko (who is no longer with us, but not because of this) put in a disappearing stitch that held things "together". There was no particular after care that I remember, but he seemed to do fine.

Hello! We went this morning and they amputated as we anticipated. He is back in his thankfully, now dry, hospital tank. I hope it is smooth sailing from here and he begins to eat again.

Bowie's photo shows a healthy weight. I wouldn't worry about that yet.

Please check the ingredients of Fluker's Repta Boost. Oxbow's Carnivore Care may be the food of choice if Bowie needs help regaining his appetite.
