    Default Handling/taming advice needed

Hello. So I just got my second Leo a little over a week ago and had some questions on how to hand tame him. My female Leo was pretty much already used to being handled when I got her so it wasn’t an issue. My boy is definitely not used to being handled and is pretty shy. Otherwise he’s healthy and a good eater. Any tips to make him feel more comfortable?

Does he seem afraid of your hand, or the actual action of being picked up?

If it's more your hand, do things like place your hand by him and patiently wait. He may lick it or walk over it. When you do things like change his water and such make sure your movements are slow, and talk to him quietly. Once he gets used to this you can start trying to pick him up, by sliding your hand under his belly. Just take it nice and slow. If he's really skittish you want him to get used to the presence of your hand before attempting to pick him up at all. You can also try giving him some nice food as a reward, but I personally found this didn't make much of a difference with mine when taming.

If it's the action of being picked up, again, take it slow. Only hold him for short moments and let him walk off when he wants to. Only handle him in the tank until he is confident enough to come out.

Also if you aren't already, try to handle him in the evening as leos are crepuscular, and he's not likely to be in the best of moods if you try to pick him up in the middle of the day.

    Good luck!

I put my hand in my leo's tank for about 5 min a day until they walked onto it. Then immediately after my geckos were on my hand they would climb onto my arm and I would be forced to pick them up (they climbed all the way up to almost my shoulder and I didn't want them falling) and after that I just gently and slowly pick them up daily to help them get used to me. For reference, my leos have been with me for just over 2 weeks and are really small. They can fit into the palm of my hand entirely, with the tip of their tail draping over. The whole process has taken me about a week. After they got settled in with their new environment, they became extra curious. If I want to tame them and hold them I do that after they've been fed and I take everything out of their tank.
