Default UTH, Tile, and Styrofoam—Concerns about Glass Thermal Stress?

Hi all! I’m new to the forum, and have looked to see if this has been asked, but couldn’t find any information on it.

I’m renovating my leos’ tank, and they have a lot of unused vertical space (it’s a 36” x 18” x 18” Exo-Terra). I was considering building a false floor with “underground” warm and cool hides, then have basking spots and hides in the “above ground” section as well. I am thinking that I will build most of the structure from styrofoam covered with grout (or something similar), and I plan to use a UTH beneath a piece of tile or slate on the warm side, supplemented with a CHE (since the false bottom would probably also be styrofoam construction and wouldn’t conduct heat).

I’m primarily concerned about the tank floor’s structural integrity, since parts of the UTH may be under the styrofoam that holds up the ground area. Will the areas of good heat conduction next to the more insulating styrofoam cause thermal stress issues with the glass?

Also, would this be a healthy environment for my little buddies, or would they not get proper heating because of the different levels of the tank?

I would very much appreciate any insights and advice! Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, if a thermostat is used with the UTH, keeping the heat in the low 90's, it should be OK for the styrofoam (if someone knows otherwise, hopefully they will post here). For heating the higher levels, your choices are to leave them unheated and expect that on cold days the geckos will stay closer to the ground or you could get a mini UTH and put it on one of the walls of the enclosure (outside, obviously).
