Default aspen crumble bedding

anyone use this as there substrate? i got it its what the petshop owner recomended for my gecko. it says on the bag its totally digestible and wont hurt your pet if accidently ingested, well a little bit ago my lil guy got a piece of it and ate I just hope he would be okay. my question is should i be okay with this? or should I change it out and try something like reptile carpet? and would a piece of indoor outdoor carpet work instead of the reptile carpet? thanks im just a lil scared about this.........Shaun

Hmm it may look kinda dangerous but I wouldn't worry. I hear it's a good bedding. I've not used it personally but I don't see it being a problem to digest.

hi,

thanks for the help. I don't know, I really don't care for tile. I prefer something that look's more natural like just me I guess but who knows I may go with tile, where can I get this at? and wont it have to be cut to fit my tank? I dunno the aspen stuff does say its safe but it just makes me wonder?

Ive never heard of aspen "crumble" but I ve been keeping leopards and dragons on aspen for years and have never had a problem. it dries quick if water is spilled or sprayed and the animals always seem to spit it out. its not as safe as paper towel but in my opinion its safer than sand or some of the other substrates out there.

I have been using aspen crumble and aspen supreme (same product just in pellet form) on all my snakes for the last 5 or 6 years (as soon as the product came out actually) I have also been using the crumbles with my leopard geckos (20+ grams) for about 4 years. I have never experienced a problem and I can't say that any of my customers who use it have experienced any either (can't say they haven't but I have never been told of one) The only thing you have to be careful of is getting it wet and staying wet (under a water bowl for example) it will mold if it can't dry out. For snakes I always recommend feeding outside the enclosure if using any loose substrate. Personally, I have found it to be the best bedding available. Everything has it pros and cons and for me this one measures up the best. Just be careful of the big bags (40 # I think) sometimes I have to sift it because its so dusty. The smaller bags are fine though without the sifting.

Hi,

Normally when you hear people recomend tile, they are talking about the non-polished stone types. Ceramics are ok, if not glazed but some tiles can be too slippery. You`de have to have a look, and find one that you like. Usually slate is one of the cheapest, it is more naturalistic, and is a decent color usually. Loose substrates can cause impaction(and death), if ingested, especially in younger geckos. I would not take a chance with it, but I`m also not familiar with that product. There are a lot of products that say they are safe(cal. sand), but are not.
