all I can say if from my experience sand is no good! if I always used repti-carpet I would still have my raptor. And it's clean, light (no more dumping 80lbs of sand) and your gecko don't take a tint of the sand color......
still say down with sand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's make sure to keep this thread civil. There's no 100% right or wrong on this topic. It's all about what YOU choose to do with YOUR animals. There are more ways than one to raise a gecko.

Personally, I like repti-carpet. I'm kind of paranoid about impaction, plus it's easy to clean and looks kind of like sand from a distance.

Why do leopard geckos not become extinct in their natural habitat ? There is a lot of sand and other loose substrate.

When I started I use papertowels now I use preprinted newspaper. My sister works at a print shop and I get rolls of paper that has not been printed on yet. I have 10 leos right now and when I get more I already have more paper than I will ever need and thats with changing everyother night

My gecko is now on tile but I plan to try either fired red clay or "adobe" baked in the sun. Since his home is made from red clay, straw and sand and his reaction when I try to replace it with some other hut, makes me want to try that for a substrate. When completely dry it is a compact, hard surface that I feel would be easier for him to move around on. The tile I use is okay but it is more difficult to walk on. It's not glossy and it's okay for "us" not to slip on but I've been trying to think of a more natural substrate and one that he could climb and manuever with greater ease.

Well...I used a mixture of coco fiber and sand when I first got my leopards and I did find some traces of debris in their (usually small bits of coco fiber) feces. However, in my 8 years of having herps from cyrtos to water dragons to leos. I have never had an impaction problem. Maybe I was lucky who knows. I currently use paper towels. Not because I think they are soo much greater than sand but because I pick up the leo put him in his holding tank, remove dishes and hide, throw away the towels sanitize rinse and put the clean stuff back. So it boils down to my laziness lol. I used to clean sand then I started just replacing sand then I said to myself "you know what paper towel time!" I having used both methods for a long time do not favor one or the other both have good uses. I will say if I were to display my leos there would be some kind of sand mixture (natural round sand not calci sand imo) going on. So in conclusion I find both methods benefit certain needs. The heated debate on this makes me laugh and I really feel like saying people are wrong and they should believe what you say is as hopeless as trying to turn a democrat into a republican or in reverse.
Yey for herps and peace out,
