@ 6 moths old (now): He graduated from slate bottom of his tank to Repticarpet.

@ 1 yr (or more depending on how I feel then): Might try Excavator clay to mold a nice naturalistic terrarium, but haven't made up my mind on anything (except no loose substrates).

Eichen ~

Slate tile is a much better substrate than reptile carpet

"Repti-carpet is a BAD choice because it harbors bacteria from pee and poop, and leos can get their claws and teeth stuck in it!

Paper towels, including brown shop paper towels, and slate tile make the best substrates for a leo."

Here are some good recommendations all around for your leo: http://www.geckosunlimited.com/commu...11-update.html

Slate tile, which can be purchased at places like Home Depot in 12 inch squares and trimmed to fit, is an excellent heat conductor. Since leos need belly heat as well as good air temperatures to digest their prey, slate tile is very good for them. It can also be cleaned in a dishwasher or by hand.

You might try using a feeding dish to contain the prey. Spraying the reptile carpet to get food and/or other things off does not get rid of bacteria.

Cresties like a substrate of Eco Earth---cocopeat fiber. That, along with a potted plant (Sanseveria), does a good job of retaining humidity in a crestie's habitat.

BTW, please note at the top of this subforum that this poll is in the leopard gecko subforum .

Paper towel all the way! It's so easy to clean, it's cheap, and it doesn't pose any risk of impaction for the gecko.

i used to use the walnut shell sand, but the first time my male ever bread, his hemipene got irritated by it. it took a little over a week to get it to go back into his body. we used hemroid creme and sugar soaks and then finally after several cold to warm water dips it shrank up. never again will i use sand. i wouldnt want that to happen again if he decided to take it out and clean it.

its not like it was my intention to have him breed at that time or i would have put down paper towels instead.

Default I use Repti-Carpet

I am a totally new owner of a Leopard Gecko, so I don't know what is the best for her. I chose the carpet because I was afraid to use any substrate that could cause her to get an impaction.
