Default What substrate are you using?

I want to get a poll going to see what people use for there substrate and what made you choose that substrate? I use repti-carpit when my geckos are young and move them to sand when ther older and larger.

I use slate tile because its a good conductor of heat and its easy to clean, plus I think its better to be safe than sorry

I just gave almost the same reply on another thread lol

I am using a micro fiber kitchen rug. Sounds weird but works really well. Picked it up at bed bath and beyond. Its thin, rubber on the bottom, and the surface has kind of a velvety feel to it. There arent any loops in the material to get stuck on and its fire resistant. Underneath that I have repti carpet so the UTH doesnt get it too hot.

Because the substrate question is such a frequent one, I'm going to sticky this thread for a while at least. However, I know that this subject can become a heated debate. So, before anything negative comes about, please respect everyone's opinions. Constructive debate is cool. But no negativity will be tolerated.
Thanks

I am currently using sand in some cages, paper towel in some, newspaper in some, aspen supreme in some, sphagnum moss in some and a mixture of coco fiber, peat and sphagnum in others. Species housed are bearded dragons, leopard geckos, dune geckos, viper geckos, banded geckos a variety of snakes, a few frogs and a lot of millipedes.

thats quite a variety that is used. Why not take a substrate that imitates the natural conditions? A soil(or clay)/ sand mix that dries in the cage. Use this and you will see how active those geckos can dig. If it is dry (i.e. if it is becoming solid), and if the geckos are well-fed with enriched food, than there should'nt be the danger of impaction. I never had any problems with that (no matter what species). I take the soil from outside, so its for free, put it in a stove for some time (to kill potentially harmful microorganisms), mix it with some suitable sand. Even my Coleonyx love it, its amazing how those small animals can burrow into the substrate, even juveniles
