I think it's less critical for males since they won't have the calcium depletion. However, since many males will stop eating for awhile when they get interested in breeding, it's probably a good idea to make sure they've attained a good percentage of their adult size. I would also suggest that the male should be at least 50 grams, but there may be individual diffences depending on the male.
