Very interesting story...I honestly am not sure I would have done the same for as long. I know I would have started out wanted to help the little one but my mentality is that the creature needs to be able to thrive on it's own, esp in this house. There is so much I am responsible for that I honestly would not have time to give the extraordinary care that Sela needs daily.
That is not to say that she should have been culled, obviously if someone is willing and able to give that kind of care, then why not. Obviously both Sela and her owner are benefiting from it on more than just the physical level.
