You don't necessarily need the air temps in the 90's. You need the surface temps in the 90's. If the air temp is that hot you could have a situation where the surface temp is even hotter which you don't want If you are using a dial thermometer those can be off by up to 10 degrees. You really need a digital one. Just go to the hardware store and get and indoor/outdoor thermometer. You should be able to get them for pretty cheap. It will come with a probe you would normally install outside. Just use that. And yes as long as the probe is making contact with the surface you will get a pretty close reading. A laser reader will be most accurate though.
