Exclamation PLEEEASE help me with my undertank heater :/

In a week I am purchasing a new Leopard Gecko. I have never had ANY type of reptile and I just came back from the store with the last supplies I needed (calcium Supplement, Cricket Orange Cube feed, and a container for my Crickets). I have everything I need set up, excluding the actual gecko and crickets I am very excited.

So I went to plug in my undertank heater, right? It starts sparking and steaming. Great. I followed all the instructions and I have it stuck to the bottom of my ten gallon tank with the sticky bumps on all four corners of the tank so it doesn't burn the wood countertop.

Has anyone else had this problem? Please help me. I have been planning for this pet for months and I am waiting until after I go on vacation for Easter this weekend to buy him.

Thanks

Then you need to return it to the store. It's not working like it should. That's a fire hazard.

What substrate are you using? Since you're new to geckos I hope it's not calcium sand. I would suggest some slate tiles. They're easy to clean and retain heat really well, plus they look good.

How do I return it to the store? It says that it is permanently stuck to the glass once i stick it

And no, I am using paper towels, a lot of people said they work nicely and they are convenient. Is that ok? And how many layers should I use? I have two layers put down right now.

You can pull if off the glass. It's not that hard. Just put it in the box, and take it back.

The thickness if the paper towel depends on the temp of the floor. If the floor is too hot, add more.

If it sparked, take it back! That's not a good sign at all!

It is not worth the risk. What if you are out, and it sparks, sets the kitchen paper on fire if you are keeping it in the tank?

I would take it back, get a new one. If you are using a glass tank like me, I put the heat mat underneath the tank.
