Default Is my leopard gecko being bullied?

Hello there,

I have two Leopard geckos which are about a year and a half old which I have had since they were fairly small. We got them at the same time from the same breeder. They both definitely appear to be female (we have checked them a number of times). One is a super snow and the other a bell albino.

There have been a couple of occasions now when I have seen the albino stalk up behind the super snow, as if she was going after a cricket, and then bite her tail. It has never happened badly enough to cause and real injury, just a little mouth-shaped graze that looks like leftover shed. It also tends to be when the super snow is standing near where the food bowl usually is, so I am unsure whether the albino could just be seeing the movement of her tail and mistaking it for food, or whether it is bullying/dominating behaviour. I would really appreciate any advice anyone could give me.

Thank you.

Phoebe

Being a year and half old, they shouldn't be mistaken tails for food anymore. That's usually a juvenile behavior. So I'd say right now that's a bullying behavior. As you have observed, this happens when the other female is standing over the food bowl. Nipping of the tails is one of their ways to get the other gecko to shoo along.

If this continues, and you don't want the other gecko to lose her tail, you may want to consider separating them.

What size vivarium do you have them in?

Have you tried using more than one feeding bowl to eliminate the chances of the agression being competition for food?

I agree with the other posts, mistaking tails for food is usually a juvenile behavior. I had two females in one cage and i had to separate them when i fed them because they would go after the same cricket and accidentally nip each other, i ended up separating them for good because i didnt want either to get hurt.
