Hello everyone,

It's been quite some time since my last post.

In any case, I bought my gecko from its original owner about a year and a half ago. He's healthy, eating well, the whole bit. Clean bill of health.

However, I noticed at the pet store the other day that what the original owner gave me as a "water bowl" is in fact described by the manufacturer as a food dish. This is somewhat similar to what I have: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

As you might imagine the water evaporates very quickly, and in really thinking about it I realize he doesn't really have any room to soak in there. He walks right through it, the water barely comes up to what you might consider his ankles.

I want to get him a better/deeper water bowl. He is a full grown gecko, but I'm concerned that introducing such a drastic change may confuse him and throw him off. My major concerns being that: he wouldn't know that water is in there and disregard it thus not hydrating. Also that he might not be used to it, slide in, and not be able to figure out how to get back out quick enough, thus drowning in his water bowl.

Do any of you think that I would potentially run into these issues?

I don't think that you need to worry about anything drastic like that happening. I would simply get a little deeper water dish and put it in the same spot. Most leopard geckos don't like to soak but I've heard of some that do. Just make sure that the water isn't deeper than say 1/2 of an inch. I know that the water evaporates sort of quickly but I always top off my h20 dishes in the morning and clean them all about 2x a week.
Two of my leos like to walk through their water dishes all the time. The other avoids walking through water like the plague!

Leopard geckos are a desert species and don't require soaking. A humid hide spot is all he needs. As long as you're providing that, you can just leave the water bowl that you currently have alone.

I have the same Zoo Med dish for my leo's water, and he likes it just fine. He stands in it sometimes and I see him drink occasionally when I only have his night red heat bulb on and he doesn't know I'm watching him. I have to add a bit of water to it every other day, no biggie.
It's fine for water, but I have a deeper dish for worms, more like a very little bowl.
