Default Help with my gecko

Hi everybody,

I have recently purchased a new baby leopard gecko. He is about 5 in. long (I would give you age but i honestly don't know). I would love to play with him a bit but even when I try to pet him he runs away. Is it to early for me to hold him?

Reply soon,
George

welcome to gu. sounds like you have a juvenile. when they hatch they are 3 to 4 inches. i would give him / her time to settle in. be patient. dont ever try to grab it. that will make your gecko stressed.give it time it will get use to you. him/ her will decide when its time, for you to handle it.
hope this helps

Like Travis said it needs time to settle. I typically give mine 2-4 weeks but I do go up to their tanks and talk to them and put my hand near it so it gets used to my scent. Talk to it as you feed it too. Before you know it they will come out of their hide when they hear your voice to see what you're doing.

Not all do though. Remember some are more social than others.

HI

Definately sounds like a juvi. My Leo is coming up to a year old now and i've had him more than half his life. TO this day, he still doesnt want to come to me for attention. If i catch him walking around his cage at night he stares with a look that says " oh crap, busted". I've come to terms with the fact that he's not a sociable gecko. Handling him on the other hand... Once I pick him up, hes fine. Will either sit in my cupped hands (nice and warm and dark for him), or he makes a bee line for my shoulder/head to get a good vantage point. Give him 2-4 weeks to get used to you and his new surroundings and i'm sure he'll enjoy a little attention from you.

Hello and Welcome,

Before I feed I also slowly lay my hand, palm side up, in the the tank. Sometimes our Yoshi will come smell and lick my fingers other days she heads to the other side of the tank just depends on the day. But do give yours a couple of weeks to destress and just talk to it when you feed.

Agreed, just give more time.
Star was like that also when she was baby. She is not just over a year and has calmed down a lot and is easily handled though I dont handle her often.
