You should have a thermostat on ANY heating device be it a uth, heatmat, che or whatever IMO. This is for the safety of your animal, the safety of your house if something overheats, and it also simply makes your job of regulating temps much easier.

I agree completely. I've never known anyone who keeps snakes without a thermostat, so I was very surprised to come over here and find so many people who think thermostats are overpriced or a waste of money. I love the peace of mind I get knowing that my animals are all "dialed in" to the right temperature. No fiddling with a rheostat, no layering tile upon tile to find the right temp, just turn the dial...

So a thermostat could bring the heat mat I have up to proper temps?

A thermostat won't increase the heat production of your UTH if it is already on full blast. Are you measuring the output temps with a digital thermometer? You say it seems cooler than your other one which was smaller. If it is the same brand, perhaps the current one is defective?

In my leo care recommendations (caresheet GU subforum) there are several links about thermostats. Don't know whether you could call the supplier with the video? What I am not sure of is how the thermostat will work if one plugs in the UTH and a overhead fixture with a low wattage bulb for viewing.

Remember, best to have a cool end in the 70s F and the warm end from 92-95 F.

What don't you understand Elizabeth? When the probe detects that it's reached the desired temp, it simply cuts power to the heat source(s) that you have plugged into it until the proper temps are achieved. In the case of using a light for a heat source, it would turn the light on and off. A CHE would be a much better solution for heat than a light (for multiple reasons) if one wanted over head heating. A light for viewing should simply be put on a timer so it cuts on in the morning and off in the evening.
