Ok so im just looking for an opnion or two. I work for a petstore and we ahve a juvenille leopard gecko that after being taken to the vet has been diagnosed with MBD. The vet says he prob wont live a year. She says hes roughly 6 months old ans he has two pretty deformed legs. I'm guessing that it was something that happened in the egg since hes so young. I'm going to adopt him because i feel bad for him and i want him to be taken care of. I just wanted some input on the possible short lifespan. Do geckos with this problem really die faster? B4 i get lectured for "feeling bad" for the little guy i want you to know that i have 2 other "special" geckos adopted from the same company just different stores one who is 4 years old with MBD has had it the 3 years ive had her and the other has 3 legs.

It all depends on the severity of the MBD and how it affects the his daily activities. Due to the involvement in the legs, I'd stick with low level decor so he can't fall and injure himself. If he can get around ok & able to hunt/eat on his own then I'd think if his husbandry is ideal he should be able to live a lot longer than the estimated 6 months; however, if he can't get around very well & has difficulty hunting/eating, then I'd say it's a wait-n-see type of situation. I'm glad that you are willing/able to provide a loving home for him...he may not live as long as a completely healthy Leo would, but he's deserves to have the best quality of life that he can while he's here.

Thank you for rescuing this little guy. Sounds as if the company might be failing to supply necessary nutrients. Have you been supplementing all these rescues with calcium with D3?

MBD in the earliest stages is reversible. Even if the MBD is more advanced, proper dusting of the food can really improve their lives.

Please post a picture of him and your other rescues. They say pictures are worth a 1,000 words.

Be sure to dust his crickets with a phosphorus-free calcium with D3 3 x per week. Then you should have a dish of 100% pure calcium in his tank 24/7.

Like Elizabeth and Andi said, Thanks for taking this little one in. I'm curious to see photos as well. I believe that MBD is not a death sentence if it is caught early enough. I hope we can help you with your "special" geckos.

I have a Leo that apparently suffered from MBD when the previous owners had her. Today she is doing well. Once they found out about feeding calcium etc they were able to get it under control. I do watch her very closely though cause I don't want a reaccurance

ill try to get some good pics up soon. I use a calcium with d3 every other feeding and a multi vitamin every other feeding plus there is a dish of straight calcium left in tanks at all times. Hot side is about 92 and cool side varies from 76 to 80 depending on the season its a 20 long that i have my two rescue girls in and the lilttle man will be in a ten but i try to maintain about the same temps with all my geckos. The company provides a multi vitamin calcium with d3 dust that there policy says to use every day. I believe that this is a breeder issue as we only had him in the store for about 2 weeks when i noticed his "deformity" he hunts very well and has a huge appetite i think he will do ok his front leg is pretty messed up but the back legs arent as bad. he walks on his ankle in the front.
