Unhappy Upset because of hide change :(

Hi everyone,

I am a new leopard gecko owner (since October), and I am hoping someone can help me out. My little guy, Echo, is growing so fast. When I first got him, I made his "hide" a half coconut shell with moss inside. He loves it! He is so comfortable in his habitat and has fallen into a very good routine.

However, he is beginning to get too big for the shell. He can still fit inside, but sometimes his tail sticks out the entrance. And, to be honest, he will soon be too fat to fit into the entrance!

So, I bought a half-log hide. Yesterday, I took Echo out and put him in his tupperware while I deep-cleaned his cage. I put the new hide in there with nice wet moss. When I returned him to his habitat, he was obviously upset he couldn't find his coconut.

I thought he'd calm down and eventually go into the new hide, but he never did. It broke my heart to see him wandering around upset. He would put his feet on the glass and kept looking. So, I ended up giving in and putting the coconut back in there.

Right now, I have both hides in there. I did not put moss in his coconut, because I don't want to make that hide "too comfortable."

Any advice on changing hides and helping your leo transition?

Thanks!

hi there

Uncanny!!! I bought my little guy also called Echo back in September. I can appreciate your concern about his tail poking out of the hide, but its not going to do any harm. the hides are there mainly to make the gecko feel secure and hidden. Keep the moss out of the coconut shell and use another hide for moss. I use a tupperware container for my moist hide. The coconut should be big enough for him to lounge in without the moss. If your worried about the entrance being a bit too small for him to squeeze through then get some sand paper and small jigsaw and make the door way a little wider. Just be sure to sand the edge smooth so he doesnt catch himself on a splinter.

Hope this helps.

I would keep both hides in. When he feels he is too big for the coconut one, he will go to the other.
