I'm not 100% sure of his morph. I'm thing high yellow/carrot tail maybe. I was thinking of a UV bulb that would cover maybe 50% of the length if his cage, but with a shield fitted so that only the rear 30% of the cage had the benefit of the light. That way then he would have plenty of space left to escape the light.
I'm not even sure on the size of my enclosure though I think its roughly about 20gal long.

It's a tough decision to make either way. There is a risk of overdosing using supplements because the specific amounts are unknown. Likewise in a small enclosure you run the risk of overexposure. The problem with using it in small enclosures is that the shortest the UVB tube they sell I believe is 15 inches long which is more than half the tank. Never use coils!! If you can't provide at least a 55 gallon, it might be much safer to rely on D3 through supplements.

Now I read that a big tank can often be stressful for a single Leo. I was originally going to be using a 5ft long fish tank but changed it because I didn't want to stress out the little fella....what are the rough dimensions of a 55gallon? We ten to work in size over here?

That's out dated information. The issues with coils was years ago, only applied to like two manufacturers, and has been resolved by both as far as I know. People need to be more careful to remember that information changes frequently and just because something was one way several years ago, doesn't mean that it still applies today. Unfortunately, with the internet, people continue to spread and regurgitate the same information around over and over again.

ive been thinking about this all day. lol. not been busy.

What if, hypothetical now, you installed a uv light and used it for say 3 hours a day about twice a week? the normal light coming through the windows will be sufficient to go throught he day/night cycle. and a uv bulb instead of regular dusting (ill still dust every other 3rd feed or so) would be better surely? i'll be giving him enough foliage and other plantation to hide behind should he feel the need?

I know not all bulbs are created equal, however I have yet to find any updated information. My fear is that someone will go out and buy the wrong kind and so my thought is better to err to what is safer. If you have any updated information regarding the coil bulbs please share as I will be very greatful.

These are choices that only you can make and my opinions do not guarantee any benefits. Before you decide to go with the use of UVB make sure you have done plenty of research. I would feel terrible if something went wrong due to my suggestions because there is too much to take in consideration. It's best you educate yourself well and choose what works for you
