THere could be a lot of reasons. Unless something dropped on its tail or another gecko attacked it, the tail loss could be due to extreme pain or stress. I fostered a gecko once that had dropped its tail for unexplained reasons. It turns out the gecko had been kept on walnut shells and the next day the gecko passed a few pieces of shell. I have a feeling that the pain of those shell pieces going through its system caused it to drop the tail. I really feel that this gecko needs a vet visit.

Agreed, vet vet vet!
It really is exaughsting how many people look on the internet for a solution, when your first search for help should be a phonecall to the vet!

IF YOU HAVE ANY HEALTH ISSUES WITH AN ANIMAL, CONSULT YOUR VET, NOW.
Most surgeries provide a 24/7 number you can call to get in touch with one of their vets, call it and explain your situation. The internet is not a vet and nobody can properly diagnose an issue without examining the animal in person.

Mine had a bad shed and it got stuck on his tail. I made appointment to the vet. I tried soaking him and helping him get the skin off. He seemed to be in pain and one day he was knawing on his tail. I left the room but when I came back he had dropped it. He is healthy and back to normal now. Even though his tail was so beautiful I am glad he is fine. I dont know what happened with yours but if you cant figure it out and there was no shedding problem I would go to the vet because it might be something wrong like a disease. If you think he is getting better it may have just been shedding. Keep an eye out for anything and please let us know what happens.

I agree with the others...vet. After dropping it's tail your gecko might feel better, even though pain, extreme fever, another gecko, or fright could make it drop it's tail...your gecko really sounds sick.
