Default Heat Stones and Feeding Qs

Hi
All seems to be going well with my Milli however after changing from Coconut fibre to dessert sand I have noticed whilst feeding him his crickets he is ingesting some sand its red dessert sand and shop said it was straight from the dessert and totally safe? Is it normal for them to swallow some when there catching there crickets? He is eating 4 crickets every other day is that enough?

Does anyone use the Exo Terra Heat Wave Rock? I bought a sml one. 5W thermo controlled electronic heat stone. Temp staying at 32C. Wondering if I should use it instead of heatpad (no thermostate) and do away with heatlamp as well. Room lite fairly well during the day.
Cheers

Heat rocks in general are considered to be junk. Most people use a a heat mat which is referred to as a UTH (under the tank heater). A UTH should also be placed on a thermostat. Really, IMO, all heating devices should be placed on a thermostat. Whether you need the overhead heating depends entirely on the temps in your house and specifically in the room that the animal is kept in. The gecko itself doesn't really require any extra lighting since it's nocturnal. As for the sand, I've never heard of a milli becoming impacted, but if it's ingesting large amounts of sand, that's not a good thing for any gecko. If it's a baby, you might try hand feeding it for a while or cutting some of the legs off of the prey items and feeding them from a bowl.

You could always feed out of the tank. It will keep your tank clean as well. No hiding bugs. I have seen bad things happen with heat rocks. I'd return it if you have the receipt. The under tank heater will be fine but I'd invest in a rheostat. It will allow you to dial in the temp. I've never heard of milli getting impacting issues but I've seen tons of leos have issues.

Heat rocks are totally unsafe. They can overheat and burn your gecko . Get the properly sized UTH to maintain the heat your milli needs.

Do invest in a thermostat. You will find two helpful thermostat links in this care sheet: http://www.geckosunlimited.com/commu...12-update.html

I recommend a shallow feeding dish for the milli's food.
