I have pothos and I have a fern that live with my anoles in a ten gallon cage. I want to expand the cage by making it taller and also removing the soil which had ants in it. So my question is what soil or substrate should I use?

I used cocofiber for my anole before she escaped.... My plants were in pots and I used organic soil for them. I had 0 problems with them! I actually love cocofiber!

Once I get the housing finished (if ever), I'll be getting anoles again. I'm planning on a planted setup with some pillbugs and springtails helping me with maintenance.

So as far as substrate, black slate, dirt, and I'm going to be putting in white clover, irish moss, and some unidentified moss from outside that I've had in a 2 liter soda bottle for 4 months (I've been plucking out anything else that sprouts to make sure I'm only adding moss).

Its a project thats been on hold indefinitely, but I'm hoping to start it up again in the spring. Pictures will of course be posted upon completion.

What kind of pots did you use?

Actually, They were small handmade pots that my husband made a few years back when he was really into pottery. They were really nice rich browns and blues that really looked "earthy." So I stuck two plants in them and watered them as needed.

Organic soil. I don't remember the name of it. Just make sure there aren't any chemicals or styrofoam in it.

Would eco earth work as coco fiber?

They're essentially the same thing. One is just finer than the other. I use a mixture of both now.

i currently have two anoles and iu use coco fiber for them. I have alof of plants in with them but i dont bother with pots, i just put the plants with in the soil of the cage. way back when i had them in pots that were buries but they grow alot better and it looks more natural id they are planted in the soil. Besides they can better take up waste that breaks down in the soil if they have roots going everywhere. If you are going to make your tank taller you might want to get a ficus tree. THey grow fast and make great perches for anoles. You'll have to prune it every so often, but look at it this way: fast growing plants that have roots going everywhere will want to get at all that nice fertilizer your anoles are making for them.
