Default auriculatus vs. sarasinorum

In the market for a Rhac, but not sure which I should get. I'm a big fan of the striped gargs, but I found a pretty good deal on a baby sara and hear they are pretty fun to keep. I also hear that sara's are flighty though and want to be able to handle safely. what are people's thoughts?

I prefer the sarasinorum over the auriculatus...I've kept both and the gargoyles just aren't as cool to me. They can have better color and pattern, but that still doesn't seem to cut it.

Sarasinorum CAN be flighty, but some are perfectly mellow like a crested gecko. Regular handling can tame them down a bit and they won't take off on you. They are fast though, don't get me wrong, so you'll want to be sure you handle in an area where they won't get away easily if they do decide to bolt. You can find some really pretty ones if you keep your eyes open...most people see only the normal brown ones for sale and they don't find them interesting.

I've found that gargoyles (at least in my experience) like to bite a little more frequently, and for whatever reason they will defecate on you every time you handle them. I'm not sure what it is, but they like to expel whenever they are touched. That drives me insane, and made me not ever want to pick them up...big part of the reason I don't care for them as much as the other species.

haha, poop is less attractive than brown coloration. yeah, i hear that the saras are hilarious and have great personalities. i do like the gargs' colors though and the fact that they don't try to run as much. plus, I have a great rock for my terrarium that is EXACTLY the coloration of most of the orange-striped gargs that I've seen (don't judge). PLUS, the price for gargs makes me hurt less. I really like the dark phase saras with blue eyes though and need a gecko with some personality.

does everyone experience the hand poop with their gargs?

Salzy pretty much nailed it, but I think gargs are the better choice. The poop thing happens only when they're young, they usually stop around 10 grams. I think gargoyles are much easier to handle than saras as a species and much more personable. I keep alot of gargs and I can count how many times I've been bitten on one hand. Its not a big deal even from an adult. Gargs do get bigger and are heavier bodied which I think is cool. Gargs also have waaaay more potential as far as color and pattern.

oh, the gargs get bigger? i thought the saras had a little bit of size on them, which is one of the things that made me lean a little that way. The saras' tails seem longer.

If you are just looking for a pet I say go for a sara. I think gargs and saras are the 2 most polar opposite rhacs. Gargoyles are chunky, fierce looking, slow and probably the most easily handled rhac. Saras are sleek, beautiful and quick.

Gargs are my personal favorite but I love saras. They seem to be very alert about what is going on around them. And they eat EVERYTHING. I have never had any of my animals eat as much as either of my saras. Honestly, it's a win either way.

I have both and I prefer the colors and variation in gargs, high red and oranges look fantastic. saras have great personalities but are not as striking in appearance, but do get wrongly written off as less interesting cresteds. You can't go wrong with either just go with your gut. as for size the weight is about the same sarasins are longer while gargs are more stout
