Default caught my willamsi in the act!

as i was going to turn the lights off on my willamsi tank last night(at 1am)i caught them in the act of mateing, they were doing it right in the open on the side of a bark tube i have in the tank, they stayed coupled for at least ten minutes, i was realy suprised they would mate at all sence i have only had them one month, to the day in fact, and i dont have them in there proper tank, a 12"X12"X18" exo, and iam still not even sure if they have mites or not

so when should i expect eggs? two weeks, four weeks?

should i start giveing them extra calcium on there flys and in there baby food right away?

and is it safe to move them to there new tank or should i wait until she lays, and then leave the eggs in the old tank to hatch?

and right after mateing i noticed the male had changed color a bit, his tail had gotten a lot lighter colored and he had a faint redish brown line down his back has anyone noticed that before?

LOL my one guy is very energetic, I've seen them carrying on for half an hour before! Usually it seems to take about a month before they lay, but since they seem so prolific I make sure to always dust the insects and give the females(and the male!) lots of repashy. As for moving them, it would probably be less stressful if you moved the female before she layed the eggs IMO.
So far I've never noticed any colour changes in my male, but my female does seem to get especially bright!

My williamsi laid an egg about a month after I caught them mating. And I had only had mine for a few weeks! Good luck with the eggs - I think I should have moved the female before she laid, but that wasn't an option back then, plus, I didn't know what to expect, or when the eggs would be laid. Oh, and my girl laid 2 eggs, but about 2 weeks apart - they apparently are single-egg clutches for these little guys.

As for color, I've seen lots of changes. The male can be anything from bright blue to navy at any time. If he's stressed and hiding up in the dark corners of the tank (thankfully this doesn't happen often), I can't hardly see him because he's so dark and blends into the black! I don't know what color he went after mating, but he's like a chameleon, so a color change doesn't surprise me at all!

Good luck!

well that was fast i looked in one of the the bamboo tubes this morning and there are two eggs!!, i thought the other female was getting a bit fat but i though it was just because she was hoggin the baby food i guess i know why now,

so i was realy not repared for this so soon, i have a hova bator i used to use for pheasants that i planned on useing, but i was going to put wax paper in the bamboo so i could remove the eggs, its a 1" piece of bamboo and i was thinking of cutting it in half as the eggs are only 4" down, and i can remove the bamboo easly, any thoughts on that? the bamboo the eggs are in is the one they bask on right under the heat light so i moved the light over a bit so as not to cook the eggs

Default Caught in the act

Dear Boogie,

I am in the same boat, I just caught my pair (which I have only had for 3 days!) copulating so I am trying to learn how to prepare for egg laying. Here's a thought, if she ovoposits in a hollow bamboo section, and the eggs are glued in, maybe just gently cut off the section of bamboo with the eggs within and put the section of bamboo in your incubator? I hope we get an answer on this, as I will face this decision soon. I was also thinking if you left the eggs "in situ" in the vivarium, maybe you could shove a small amount of sphagnum moss into the bamboo over the eggs, which would help retain humidity, and maybe reduce interference from other geckos? Thoughts from you experienced breeders? Thanks, Vic H. P.S. Yes, the down side is you would be removing what is obviously a favored nesting situation...how "picky" are they?

well i havent done to well with the eggs, i just took the whole lenth of bamboo out with the eggs in it, and replaced it with another hopefully exceptable peice it looks pretty much the same with the same size hole, i cut up a plastic baggie and put that inside so if they lay there i can remove the plastic with the eggs on it, i hope, they have not taken to the new bamboo yet but one was sleeping it last night so hopefully they except it, i also added another same size one on the other side of the cage, also with a plastic lined inside just in case,

i had a hard time finding my incubater in our basement so the eggs have just sat on top the main cage for the last wile, so iam hopeing wonce i get the incubater up they are still viable,
