Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether my male lygodactylus williamsi came with a regen tail or retained shed? His tail looks lighter than the body the rest of the time, except when he looks happy.
I have tried giving him a bath, but I couldn't get anything off his tail:

I agree with hexentanz that it looks like a regenerated tail.
has the gecko moved into its terrarium recently? (it sounds like it is a new gecko from your post)
If it is new then it is ok that it is not bright blue, but if has settled down it should color up and more or less stay that way all the time. The dark color is a sign for stress which is normal for new animals, but should not be a big issue for well settled animals.
I would say that within two weeks it should be all fired up.

Thanks for your post. He's on and off with his colour, when I get in after a day out he's sometimes bright blue but if he sees me he hides and goes dark again.
He's only as dark as he is in the photo because he was having a bath to see if it was retained shed. Glad to know there's nothing seriously wrong!
