lepidodactylus lugubris pics and info
We have 3 new lepidodactylus lugubris...I can't seem to find out a whole lot about them so any info will be greatly appreciated. I already know how they are female and that they lay sticky eggs onto surfaces, temps, etc. but that is about it. Here are a couple pics...which haven't been easy to get..
Is it safe to get sticks, leaves etc from outside and bake them? I bake my wood even store bought, for my cresteds and snakes. But not sure how to do the leaves. We live in a highly wooded area and have all kinds of leaves right now but wasn't sure if I could use them. What is in the tank now was in there when I got them last week.
Any cleaning suggestions since they are so hold to get and hold on to..to be able to put them in a separate container to clean the whole cage??

Gini, Mike, & Jacob ~
Here's another care sheet link from the earlier days of GU: Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris) Care Sheet
(I wrote that.)
Updates: I only use a light dusting of Rep Cal's phosphorous-free calcium with D3 all the time, and very infrequently (maybe once a month) Rep Cal's Herpitivite with Beta Carotene.
I keep all my Lepidodactylus lugubris in rooms which have 68 F for the low, 72 F for the high unless warmed by the sun through the windows. I do not usually keep them warmer. However, they relish extra heat from even the fluorescent Slimline strip light I have on one tank. And the hatchlings always hover in the warmest place in the tank while snoozing .
I use Eco Earth cocopeat fiber as a substrate.
Rest is as stated.

Yes, this is what led me to this site. Thank you! We were feeding them bean beetles that the owner gave us but they were getting all over the place and I wasn't sure if they were eating them. I keep CGD in there all the time as well as water. I tried Dubia Roaches the other day. One of them ate one but not sure which one. Two look alike but the other is totally different. So if I witness that one eating then I will know but I didn't witness who ate it. I am ordering some fruit fly cultures today. But Mike isn't thrilled with them. We weren't going to start a dubia colony but some of our cresties were fed on them before so we have a nice colony started...just too many big ones right now so I will need to sell them....somewhere. We have about 400 dubia. Not all of the geckos eat them though so I will probably end up with extra alot. I hope they make it okay until I get the fruit flies. I was really hoping they would eat the dubia so I wouldn't have to have another colony of bugs.

Hi and welcome to GU. Lateralis roaches are much smaller than dubia's. They're also much more active which helps incite the prey drive in a lot of geckos. They're very easy to breed as well. So, you might want to give them a try. If you decide to sell your dubias, drop me a PM. I might be interested if the price is right. I need to add to my colony.
Try cypress mulch for a substrate. It's cheap (like $4 for a big bag) and easy to get at Lowes or Home Depot. And it gives a nice, naturalistic look. Bamboo always makes for nice naturalistic "branches" for gecko to run around on/in. If you want to do leaves from your yard, I'd suggest drying them in the sun first to get most of the moisture out so they don't get moldy. And then I'd stuff them in a plastic bag and freeze them for a while to get rid of most any creepy crawlies that might be on them.

The one main thing i found with these girls is to make sure the top is a fine mesh and sealed really well. I always end up finding babies not in the cages. They are so small you cant even see them half the time. What i have found that kinda works is to lay a fine mesh creen over the tank the put the fitted screen top on top. Kinda like double screaning.
