Broghammerus Hoser, 2004: valid or not?
Knowing that the works of R. Hoser are controversial and criticized by most taxinomists, is the genus Broghammerus (for retics and Timor pythons) really valid or not?

There are lots of threads about him thats the problem
Have a look in the venemous section thats where he usualls submits his findings. Most of the people on there seem to see him as a bit of a joke.I dont know him so cannot comment, but it does seem strange that he has renamed species after his family or strange sexual acts.

Herve, Raymond Hoser routinely reclassifies animals. his scientific "papers" are poorly written, antagonistic rants that do NOT go through peer-review, and his "journal" is self-published.
if he had peer-reviewed scientific justification I'd absolutely be on board with his work, but from the handful of his articles that I have read, he can be ignored with no worries. all he's really doing is muddying the water for real taxonomists, and confusing people who don't know his stuff isn't actually based on good, hard science.
and, as he's Oz-based; if his changes really took hold most of my collection would be improperly named

actually, I have heard from another source today that perhaps this change will stick, as there was prior precedent for the change.
I am looking to verify this and will come edit this posting when I have something concrete.
edit: http://www.smuggled.com/pytrev2.htm (on Hoser's own site) of the article justifying the change.
I'm still not seeing any reason to change the name in popular usage. he's describing novel subspecies and is using a recognized synonym (Broghammerus and not Python) as the genus name.
I did a search of a handful of online taxonomic databases. I saw that in some the change was adopted as a synonym and some have either not adopted it or it has not been updated.Last edited by Aimless; 02-23-2013 at 11:02 PM.

and thanks for the answers guys. I know Hoser tried to rename most Aussie python species with f.e. subspecies of womas (A. ramsayi) only defined through their geographic range
