I found having a rock jumble or pile works better then a dedicated hide. The random, uneven shapes and the overhangs, cracks, perches, caves, and basking spots the rock pile creates makes my pictus very happy.
I live in the midwest where all our bedrock is sandstone which is found in the geckos native southern Madagascar. I don't know if wild geckos would necessarily be found near sandstone but they seem to enjoy it in captivity.
