P. rangei egg laying
P. rangei have been on my "want list" for some time now, and I finally picked up a subadult, sexed pair about a month ago. I was told that it would probably be best to wait until next spring to start breeding them. The male and female are housed separately in simple shoebox setups and seem to be doing very well. When they are ready to be housed together, I will put them in a more naturalistic setup.
My question is this... a couple of days ago while feeding, I found an egg in the container with the female. Obviously infertile as she has not been with the male. If she is starting to produce eggs, would you think it's time to introduce the male? I'm in no hurry to breed them, and don't mind waiting until next year, but is it any more stressful to produce fertile eggs as compared to duds?
I know that with my helmeted geckos, once the females started laying infertile eggs, they just kept on laying despite the fact that I didn't have a male at that time. Do you think the rangei will do the same?
I have the hatch dates for these animals at home, but don't have access to them at the moment. Would really appreciate others experiences in terms of age at which you began breeding and / or appropriate weights for breeding. I haven't worked with this species before, so I don't know if these animals are nearly adults, or if they still have some growing to do.
Thanks for any input.
