I have acquired this 5 year old (?) Leo this week. Its tail was bitten off twice by another Leo it shared a tank with. The previous owner said the first tail grew back, but this one has been like this for about a year now. Has anyone else had this happen? Any thoughts? 96E85BD5-53BA-4786-9792-6B17514AFC7A.jpg

Not always does a nipped off tail fully regenerate. Sometimes a tail doesn't regenerate at all. All that would be left is a stub. A gecko can live a good life minus his or her tail.

In my book some "tail" is better than no tail at all.

I THINK she is a she. This is my first attempt at sexing a gecko, but the pictures online make it look obvious. I could be totally wrong. Her name is Godzilla- the previous owner did not know the sex of the 3 geckos they were parting with. 2 that seem to enjoy each other went to my coworker- they are well taken care of in a 7th grade science classroom. And the picked on “Zilla” came home with me. First reptile I have owned and I am learning a TON. This forum is so great for that! I know Zilla already feels safer and likes to bask on her slate during the day.

You ARE welcome! Godzilla is a great name! Geckos Unlimited has most all the info a leo keeper will need.

Slate is the ideal basking stone.

Even 2 female leos can suddenly have a bad day. One of those could be the "loser". That's why many keepers only recommend keeping leos together for breeding purposes.


(4) Sexing Leopard Geckos -- A leopard gecko's gender can be confirmed when that leo is over 5 inches (12.7 cm) in total length. That may happen when the leo nears 6 months old. Males can be distinguished from females by a distinct /\-shaped row of femoral pores above the vent and by two hemipenal bulges below the vent. To see their vents, potential male femoral pores, and hemipenal bulges gently press their bodies up against the glass. They'll squirm if you try to turn them over.
