I was planning on making my leopard gecko enclosure bioactive. If the substrate is too thick should I place the heat mat on the side of the tank or is ot absolutely necessary for it to be on the bottom?

Side-mounted heat mats are ineffective, since heat rises. Many leos don't climb much at all.

One option is making the substrate thin where the heat mat is. A deep substrate will impact heat transfer.

Another option is using overhead heat. That does dry out the air.

Yeah I thought deeper substrate could affect heating. I suppose I could make the substrate on the warm side thinner and make it thicker on the cool side.

That's a good plan. That's what Swisswiss did in that link.
