"Reptiles", like most snakes and desert lizards live in fairly dry environments compared to Tokay. Tokay live in 100%, dripping wet, tropical jungles on the equator. Hot and very wet.
This is a great environment to grow almost any mold, fungus or bacteria. Without really good ventilation, these unwanted growths are very hard to eradicate from plastic.
Also, Tokay cannot stick to most plastics. They just slide down to the ground which is unsettling to them. A couple of plastics do seem to work, and in a small collections one could stay on top of the cleaning routine required to keep unwanted bacteria at bay.
The issue with cleaning all the time is that you are disturbing the nesting and egg laying areas which will cause the female to 'hold' her eggs or stop laying all together.
I hope that helps.
