Hi mate
I've just joined the forum and was reading a couple of threads on NZ geckos. Ive been interested in reptiles since I was a kid but only recently have thought of getting a permit to keep natives. I have to agree with you about the largest threat to our lizard population, rather than hunters or poachers the main issue is cats. I live in an amazing part of Waiheke Island a few years ago I used to often see forest geckos around the section, now thanks to most of my neighbours having cats geckos are hardly ever seen. Its quite hypocrytical to me for DOC to allow people to have such pets roaming the bush whilst heavily regulating anyone who takes an interest in reptiles. Anyway enough of me ranting, can you tell me what exactly is involved in aquiring a permit and how to approach it? I've looked at Doc and NZHS websites and they both say just to contact the nearest DOC office and obviously display knowledge of the husbandry and housing required.
Cheers
Will
