I have never given my leopard geckos any sort of hibernation/brumation. I leave their heat on year round. I was wanting to get some pros and cons of cooling leopard geckos, as I am seriously thinking about trying a brumation this year. Thanks for any input any of you can offer.

I totally agree with Nathan. I've never brumated mine either and have had great success. The only thing I change is the daylight cycle.

do they need it, is it bad for thier health if they do`nt?
I'm also considering brumating this year for 2 reasons:
a. to see if the mid-season run of bad eggs I've had the last 2 years changes at all with brumation
b. I will be out of the country for 10 days at the end of Dec.
I actually have a trustworthy person that I can pay to come in and take care of the geckos while I'm gone, but if I decide for other reasons to brumate, this will make her job easier.
I'm interested in hearing from people who have tried it both ways and whether or not it made a difference.

brumnation to do or not to do
If you consider Leopard Geckos originally come from areas that are Dry, arrid, deserty type areas that dont have 4 seasons like we do here in the midwest then it would seem that brumnation is not neccessary in those kind of conditions. However, when an animal is exposed to constantly changing temperatures and weather conditions its only natural Geckos would go into a state of brumnation to survive these kind of weather conditions. So if you look at it that way, its not necessary for the Leopard Gecko to go into brumnation, I dont think it has any impact on the Gecko's health whether or not it chooses to go into brumnation or not. Some Geckos will go into brumnation whether you induce conditions or not. If your gecko is getting noticeably sleepier, eating less but otherwise healthy he may be going thru brumnation. Just let him be, keep the under tank heater on at all times though. Make sure hes got a warm and cozy den to sleep in. I recently got a hide away that you can see thru the wall of the tank, so I can keep an eye on him without disturbing him. Also keep note of his size, weight loss should be very minimum during brumnation. If you notice dramatic loss in weight or size there may be something wrong. I hope that answered your question.

yes thankyou for your input if they do`nt need it i do`nt think we will bother then as i am disabled i need the heat and where my vivs are i have diffiiculty cooling them down likewize my hubbys snakes he dos`nt cool them down either because our house is to warm and here in the UK we do`nt have proper seasons as such:bi

Now that Spring is here and warmer temps, it seems two female Leos I had been very concerned about (due to being thin and always sleeping), was unfounded. They have now "perked up" and are eating more and are more active overall, so I am thinking they were in "brumnation" and decided it was time to come out of it!
