question about bed-a-beast bedding

Not sure which forum to ask this in, so ill ask here.

You know how Bed-A-Beast bedding comes in packages like this:

?

Whats the best way to cut it up and save it all?

What I mean is, i only use it for the moist box in my milii tanks which takes up like 1/10 of the brick, but you need a hacksaw to cut through that thing if you dont use the whole brick

so is it possible to expand the whole brick, and then save what you dont use? If so, how?

I save extra coconut fiber in 5-gallon buckets. It dries out over time, so I simply mist it until I get the desired amount of moisture. You could also store it in large(1-2 gallon) ziploc bags.

but wont the moisture while it dries out cause mold to grow on it? and do i need to cover the 5 gallon buckets?

I just keep the buckets uncovered, and I let them dry out in the sun before I store it. I know it is kind of silly since I add water to it in the beginning, but this is what works best for me.

i actually did cut mine.. i only need about a 1/4 of mine so i took a utility knife scored it a few dozen times on each side and just snapped it. expanded that amount and then put the rest in a bag.

never thought about expanding the whole block. lol

The block is really a bunch of layers so you might find it easier to cut the block lengthwise on the grain. You might also find that if you soak the block in about a cup of water, you will only expand a part of it and this you can peel off while the rest of the brick stays dry.

i've done both--i keep mine expanded and try in a 5 gallon bucket as nathan mentioned if i'll be using it in the next week or two, otherwise i just break part of the brick off (usually in halfs or thirds) and save the rest for later. If you're going to do that, leave the wrapping on, it helps to keep the excess stuff and powder from going everwhere.

I guess I should've mentioned that I don't store it for too long. I go through about a brick a week.

yea that makes a difference as well....since the bedabeast only gets changed about once a month it will be stored for a long time
