Substrate?

Ecoearth and Bedabeast are fine for substrates. The branches should be of different thicknesses, as long as they're strong enough to not break under the weight of the geckos. They love to climb; the more branches, the better.

If you keep enough distance between the branches you can observe your crestie "hopping" from branch to branch. And like Babamb said Ecoearth and Bedabeast work really great.

Soak them in water for a minute or so and cook them for about 5-10 minutes like Andrew (herperboy) suggests. They will not burn, but you need to keep an eye on them.

i suggest a substrate of dirt. plain clean soil, no animal wastes or worm casting.
add leaf mould, sand, milled peat moss and it should great for your plants and so on. if you have a Home Depot, buy a bag of Super Soil brand potting soil, brown and yellow bag as it is just what you want. then in a ratio of 30% mix one/third of the other items to the soil and mix. black bag this for a few days in the sun and vola! dirt...
as for wood. i've been hearing the whole soak and bake idea but really you don't have too. imagine trying that with a four foot long tree banch that is 2 feet wide? heck! just spray it off well so no spiders and such remain and you're good to go.
also, i've seen in many of the cresty tanks that they seem enjoy a finer bark like a maple or ficus better then oak or other heavy thick barked branches. I've also noted the activity on branches with an average diameter of their waste and mid section more then larger or smaller sized branches. hope this helps.

black bagging is just a term meaning to place the dirt in a black bag and
set it in the sun for a while to thermally cook. this helps lot's of ways.
as a vivarium builder i can' condone cutting live trees. find felled wood or something. call an aborest but don't destroy what we're trying re-create.
do some research of local trees, library books work, so you find good wood and not bad. soft woods will break down fast.

oh. yeah i forgot to mention. the neighbors cut down two huge branches off one side of the tree, without permision :x and the tree was falling slowly. it would have squashed the air conditioner. so i just cut several branches off. more like half the foliage on the right side but still. this tree grows faster than usual. after two months of living here its grown too many branches it seems.
the branches that i cut i am planning to dry out in the sun. in arizona that works fairly well with it being very dry and hot. if they don't ill find something else.
and one more thing. do cresteds actually change color? like chameleons or does it look that way with certain light?
