I am wanting to put together a small breeding group of day geckos for the desk at work. Since I am sitting at the darn thing a minium of 8 hours a day I need some company:) I have a shelf of that is at eve level with me so something active will be great. The shelf is 4' x 18" deep.. Let me know your thoughts on what specie to work with as I am familier with their care(been reading) but not the diffrences in the subs.. Thanks in advance and God Bless,

Totally depends on your likes, and what sort of care/environment you want set up. I personally keep P. barbouri, P. klemmeri, and P. quadriocellata. I have the P. klemmeri in my office in a 15G tall. If you're wanting a big set up, go for a bigger gecko.

I like the P. klemmeri because they can breed in the tank without you having to handle the eggs. If the tank is big enough, and you get younger animals, you can have several in a larger tank.

Well I want colorful of course.. I woudl ike to do a naturalistic display type cage.. All of mine currently are straight breeder cages... So the P. klemmeri will not eat the babies?

No, they don't typically eat their young. Sometimes there will be tail nips. Their tails are hard to tell if there's a grow back, you have to look real close. I also have barbouri which typically leave their young alone, but a totally different set up.

Klemmeri would prefer a planted tank with bamboo in it and high humidity, where as barbouri prefer a sand based tank with slate rocks, humidity doesn't need to be quite as high.

I would say that barbouri are a tad bit more skittish, but I'm sure they would calm down if they constantly saw you. They mostly react to movement.

Another difference in having klemmeri is that they are one of the smaller species of day geckos. At full size they eat fruit flies and pinhead crickets. The barbouri can take mealworms and 1/4" crickets. Both will eat peach babyfood.

There are so many day geckos out there.. but those two are my favorites. The barbouri is pictured in my avatar.
