Strange glands on female O. castelnaui

Hi guys,

This is my first time at keeping O. castelnaui and I was wondering if this is normal?
My female O. castelnaui has developed what looks like 'glands' on the side of her face/below ear towards her neck (see pix).
Is this normal/abnormal? Is there something that makes these appear (ie: lack of something in diet? heat? cold? season?)

Any clues on this, folks?
Thanks.

Some of my Castelnaui & Coggeri have this - I think you will find that its nothing to worry about. Its FAT I reacon - I personally would consider reducing food. However to be honest I aint a vet I am only going by what my vet told me when she checked my Oedura out. Man mine are way overweight she said - I better start brumation.

Hi Mil,

One of my adult female H.binoei has the same lumps in the same place, I believe it is a build up of calcium, but best to wait until Danny gets online.

She's a beauty!!

Hi,

Mine has this aswell! I didn't know there's a name for ... ?!

But my male has more than my female, so that's why I guessed more in direction of calcium reservation ...

But I would agree: Nothing to worry about!

Greats from Switzerland

Yes, GeckoHunter, do not worry as I got my Northern Velvet ages ago and since the day I got her, she has always had those glands on the side of the throat. I have been lead to believe that they are there for fat storage or for calcium storage, Either way they are not doing any damage or stopping her from eating so that fine.
Cheers

Calcium storage sacs are common in many gecko species but are most evident in hard shelled egg layers (cyrto's and Christinus for the Aussies). They can be massive in Phelsumas and are a sign of good calcium levels. Troy, I would agree, many of your guys are bordering on obese based on the pics in your avatars. They need a good three months off before next breeding season.

Danny you are correct 100%.

I havent been feeding my Coggeri & Castelnaui now for over 2 weeks - the vet said "they are way to well looked after to the point of obesity", actually she hasnt ever seen a trio of Castelnaui that big before - bigger than my thumb.

One of my past pairs of Gehyra Variegata had those same lumps on the neck so I guess it is possible for a large range of Geckos to get these glands.
