Diplo's duration between laying??

Hi All

Just curious with all those Diplo breeders who have had females lay one clutch after another - whats the duration with Diplo's from one clutch to when she lays again? Obviously this isnt always the case but just curious from those who have had it happen. Is it every 2 weeks or 4 weeks?

Cheers in advance.

Cheers Danny

Reason being is that my Diplo Graneriensis pair laid but alas I was in Melbourne on a conference & the lady looking after everything didn't check & the eggs dried up - what a blow.

Cheers.

Damn shame, Troy. Always really disappointing when you find them and there is nothing you can do to save them.

Says Mil - keeping an arms length from Sarah...

Just thought I would give an update on the D. Graneriensis - as I thought this was interesting.

Anyway left for Melbourne on the 10th September & the female was still gravid - then on the 13th September the lady looking after the geckos while I was away said that the D. Graneriensis was digging a fair bit, then that afternoon said that they both looked similar in size now(male & female) but wasn't sure. Anyway I lost that 1st clutch.

However very early this morning (September 27th) she laid her 2nd clutch which is like a 14 day interval between the laying of the 1st clutch to the laying of the 2nd clutch - rather fast.

Anyway I found this rather interesting.

Update - Graneriensis just laid her 3rd clutch on the 10th Oct 2006 - thats again a 2 week interval from the last clutch laid on the 27th September.

Whats the chances of a 4th clutch being laid on the 24th Oct?

Mil - my incubator is full now, only had one small space left for the Graneriensis eggs.
I have had to order a 2nd Hova - Bator incubator from the USA which should be here by Friday - hoping - coming by FEDEX.

I am rather concern by this amazing change in the geckos behaviour & this amazement of eggs - concern by the time factor when they hatch.

Today Monday the 23rd October my Diplodactylus Graneriensis laid her 4th clutch of the season - that is more or less 13 days from the last clutch.

Has anybody else keeping D. Graneriensis had similar 13-14 day intervals between laying at all?

The strangest thing is that the female doesn't seem to have lost little to nil body weight from both tail & abdomen considering the clutches & intervals.

Cheers

Hi Ari,

I have a female D. stenodactylus that's laying at 16 day intervals and a female S. williamsi that lays every 14 days like clockwork. As long as you're keeping her well fed and provide plenty of calcium, your female D. graneriensis shouldn't be any worse for the wear. The only thing that I've had to do in this case is to be sure to "force" them to stop before they lay too many clutches in a season. I usually do this by initiating cooling early. I have a nice cool basement that I can move them to, which helps me cool down geckos at any time of the year.

Hope this helps,
Aaron

Thanks for that mate. How many clutches should I allow her to have before I stop her? - Honestly I think I have enough clutches now from her. All eggs from past clutches are fertile.

I tend to start cooling after the 5th or 6th clutch if they aren't starting to slow down on their own. I do this for 2 reasons. One is that you'll most likely get 1-2 more clutches while you start the cooling process, and second, because I don't want them to lay too many clutches and then not be productive in following years. In my experience, if you really let Diplos or Stroph's go crazy in their first year breeding, it will hurt future breeding. I have heard of Strophurus laying 10+ clutches in their first year breeding, and only laying 2-3 at best in the following years.

I'm sure that other people have had similar, or different experience, and hopefully they'll chime in and share it with us. You really can't have too much information on the subject. :D
