UV bulb preferences?

Hello,

I'm sure this has been a topic before, but am curious as to what brand of UV emitting Flo. bulb is everybody's favorite for use with basking gekkonids (mainly Strophurus spp). I have had equal success using solely incandescent spot lamps, but figured I'd return to my earlier husbandry practices and try throwing some UV's over their enclosures.

Thanks in advance,
Tom Wood

I prefer 2 or 3 ft batten with a fluro UVA / UVB placed above enclosures - reason being kills 3-4 birds with one stone - if you know what I mean - one fluro light for 3-4 enclosures.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I am unfamiliar with NEC. Are they marketed differently here in the states?

Ari, I am using double 4ft fixtures suspended closely above their enclosures. The animals can get within inches of 80 watts of flo. lamp.

I know in the US there are the familiar "Reptisun" bulbs marketed by Zoomed, but was wondering if there is anything better out there?

Thanks again,
Tom

Hi Tom.
With Strophurus I 'blast' them with UVB from one of the sunbed type bulbs. This is because I use Exo-Terra tanks and extremely little UVB penetrates through the mesh lids. I know this because I have tested it myself with a UVB meter.
To 'blast' is using the high-powered bulbs for several minutes without anything blocking the UVB - although a chance for the animal to escape the light/heat should be given. This should be done with a safe distance between the animal and the bulb as they are VERY powerful. I aim for basking something around 300 uW/cm2 .
Great care should be taken when using this method as it has obvious health implications for both you and your animals if not used properly.
Hope I have explained this clearly and if you have any more questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers,
Dan
