terrestrial klemmeri?!?!

I found my gravid female close to the substrate a few days ago. It puzzeled me, as I usually find her at the tip top of her terrarium. So today, I look under a piece of flat bamboo I left on the bottom of the terrarium, its a half piece, and I see her hinding under it! I was so suprised. Why would she do this? There are 5 pieces of bamboo, full tubes, and ive never seen this before. she has plently of hides, and the male is never on the gound. She is carrying eggs, could this be why? Thanks

Might be because shes gravid,I hope this is true with some geckos,because my female Ailuronyx has been on the ground for some days now.So hopefully shes gavid!

there could be a number of reasons. My gecko used to do this when stressed, but i don't think this was the whole reason. Check your hygrometer. Often they will go down to the substrate if it is not humid or hot enough in the tank. Other than this, it could merely be due to her being gravid. Make sure she doesn't get stuck though. It could be rather bad if she did.

haha yah, I mist the klemmeri 2x a day, and then let it dry out. It goes from like 100% humidity, and its lowest point is 35%, then I mist again. i'll keep you all updated on her. Thanks

mine used to do that too. i think it depends largely on the substrate. somehow they are more willing to hide in wood-based substrate. mine's soil now.

35% is quite low. How long does it stay at 100% and how long does it stay at 35%? I wonder if you are just getting a quick spike to 100%, then it quickly goes back down. You might want to do more than mist and give some areas a good soak and see what happens to the humidity cycle.

You might also consider setting aside one area - maybe a potted plant with a saucer under it to contain any extra moisture - to give them a localized area with high humidity. That way in addition to giving them different temperature zones, you give them different humidity zones. This will give you an opportunity to monitor their preferences.

i don't peter I only have a grandis, but i'm using her as an example. I would love to get my hands on some klemmeri though (figuratively of course)

Hey Peter,

It's not uncommon for my adult klemmeri (gravid females included) to spend some time at the bottom of the cage or under stuff. Its not an every day occurrence, but they do it. Especially during the hottest and dryest parts of the day. So long as it isn't prolonged behavior and a sign of health issues...

thanks everyone, and I realized what happened. I missted a soil cleanning day, where I soak all the cypruss mulch, and give it more humidity. I did so, and now it stays in the 70s all day.
