Hello everyone, nice to see such an active group of gecko enthusiasts.
I've been keeping geckos for a few years, mostly individuals of the more commonly available species and have become recently interested in trying my hand at starting a (hopefully fun & rewarding) breeding project, and I'm currently leaning towards trying my hand out with either P. androyensis, or viper geckos.
I'm somewhat limited, both in terms of space and budget, so nothing terribly exotic or large will do, (at least for the moment. )
Personally, I think P. androyensis seems like a more interesting species to keep, as it seems that they have more interesting behaviors and patterns than vipers. Also, their small size, while limiting in terms of "showiness" make them a lot easier to keep in my apartment. I'm a bit concerned about doing things right, as this would be the first species I'd acquire with the specific intent of breeding them.
So I thought I'd ask and find out what the consensus opinion on what their relative suitability for a first time breeder is, before I commit any real resources to obtaining any new geckos.
I already have a clean, but empty 10G tank that currently houses some potting soil, a couple of rocks and a scrawny but big leaved, Pothos that would probably do fine for a 1.2 trio.
It is a bit bare, but I wanted to leave it fairly sparse until I decided what to do with it. It needs a little bit more ground cover if I were to use it for androyensis, (or any other small, terrestrial gecko, for that matter,) but following the suggestion of adding dead leaves would make up for it, and look fairly good, to boot.
Should I include a shallow water dish, or are morning and evening mistings the preferred hydration method for these geckos?
It looks like it would be quite easy for me to maintain the proper environment for them on my (reptile/bed) room, as it already seems to meet the general requirements stated elsewhere on this forum and the web, but I wanted to get an "expert" opinion first. So I would appreciate any advice or recommendations you might be willing to make.
I'm not planning on doing anything immediately, but maybe within the next few months, if nothing else distracts me along the way.
