How good are cresteds at escaping?

Basically, what I am in the process of doing is converting a 28 gallon bow-front saltwater tank into a viv for a few cresteds. One of the concerns that I have are, how good are the little buggers at escaping? I already know I will have to find a way to block off where the filter and spillway used to be, but my main concern is the lid of the tank. As this is my only means of entry, I still need it to be accessible. It has a flip top lid that is hinged about half way back, but the part I worry about is there is a half circle cut out about the size of my thumb. I'm pretty sure small juvies would be able to squeeze through the hole. I just don't know if I should do a whole lid replacement (or how I would for that matter) or if there are some other options. I really don't want a "temp fix" look for it either as it will be a show piece in my living room. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

<--- I just love this little dude! :coverlaugh:

Crested are not like leopards, they do climb on walls so there is always a chance they can get out. They are normally not really fast and kind clumsy, but just about any reptile will try to escape if there is an opening. Unless there is a very small hole inside the top I would say your probably going to have to do something about it. To play it safe you may just want to buy a new cage top to insure they stay in there.
Hope this helped

Cresteds are good at escaping. I had a similar enclosure, and one slipped out and I didn't find him for several days. Try to block that up with silicone or something if you can.

Generally, I haven't had problems with cresteds escaping, but that does not mean that they aren't good at it. I have a pvc coated wire mesh cage that has 1inch x .5inch gaps. Most of the cresteds that I've put in there haven't been able to get out, but a couple can. The ones that get out are well sized adult females, which was suprising to me. Now I only keep the largest of my cresteds in this cage.In the long run, I think it would be better to be safe than sorry.
