I am taking a week long trip to Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of May. Most of my trip will be partying and photographic events. But 2 days are reserved to go visit a patch of jungle just southeast of Rio. Does anyone know if any geckos reside in this area? Any other herps you know of in particular?

Hey, hope you have a good trip. I am an American and I have been living and working in Brazil for two years........I dont know who your traveling with, but Rio is very dangerous. I wouldn't be exploring on your own to much. Be careful. The only geckos that I have seen are little, whitish colored house geckos. They are everywhere during the summer months.

I will be visiting a very good friend of mine. He will be there for 5 months already as a student by the time I visit. I have heard of the dangers and have started taking precautions in how I will secure my belongings. Those house geckos are Hemidactylus mabouia. Those are the only geckos I am aware live in the area. I can find those in south Florida by the hundreds too though.

the turnip tailed gecko (thecadactylus rapicauda) may occur in Brazil i believe, it is certainly well spread throughout southern america.
Have a good trip, beware of the piranhas, and not the ones in the water!!

I did a quick search on T. rapicauda and found a site with there range:
<BBIS Species Account 030070>
I have no clue of the geography of South America so I don't know if it's by Rio de Janeiro or not. I found another site that said they were the largest gecko in South America. I used to keep a pair and really liked them, so if you wanna throw a couple in your bag and drop them off to me you can:biggrin:, just kidding though. Have a good trip and take a lot of pictures.

No Thecadactylus rapicauda in Rio. They live only in amazon forest, which ranges in the north and part of west and northeastern Brazil.

book cover thumbnail Reptiles of Central America
by Gunther Köhler
Herpeton Verlag, Offenbach, Germany, 2003

This is an English-language combination and translation of two earlier German-language books. The introduction says that it is intended for both herpetologists and travelers, but it's much more of an academic reference than a field guide for the layperson. However, everyone with an interest in herps will be attracted by its comprehensive nature and the generous quantity of good color photographs. For each genus inhabiting the area it provides some citation-rich habitat and behavioral information and a dichotomous key for identifying the species; for each species it provides the original reference and type locality, and a good range map. Many but not all species are illustrated with color photos.

You find much in the way of geckos in southern Brazil...Most are north of Brasilia. North eastern Brazil will hold the most species of geckos
