New to Uroplatus, some questions about vivaria size and hardiness

Hello everyone, I've been keeping and breeding Rhacodactylus for some time now, and i've been interested in the Uroplatus genus for quite some time. I'm at a stage in my life where although the next year or so will be quite uncertain, after that my lifestyle should mellow out alot (i move alot at the moment, making keeping delicate species impossible!) and I intend to get into keeping, and hopefully breeding some Uroplatus.

I had kind of decided on U.henkeli, as my reading has told me that it was a good starter species, i love how they look (esp the pied ones!) and they are pretty readily available CB (compared to some others). However there seems to be alot of conflicting information as to the size requirements of these geckos.

I love the Exoterra vivs, and aim to replace all of my current 18X18X24 talls with the new larger size 24X18X24. I was hoping to use one of these 24X18X24 to house my Uroplatus too, but the more i read the more it seems that it wouldnt be suitable for henkeli.

Could you please advise me on what size enclosure would be best to house, say 1.2 or 1.3 U.henkeli and where i might be able to get such an enclosure from (I really want all glass with front opening doors like the exoterras)

Also, which Uroplatus species would do well in a 24X18X24 viv that are suitable for a uroplatus novice, and relatively easy to breed.

Everyone seems to have such different ideas on this, like i see one viv which is enormous, like 1.2m tall and 60cm wide, and another person being advised he can keep a pair in a 17.5gallon viv!!!

It really depends on the commitment level you want to go for.

In that size range, ebanaui, guentheri, phantasticus and pietschmanni will do fine. Sikorae i like giving more room to because they will investigate all of it.

The remaining species will do well in anything larger. I keep henkeli and fimbriatus as well as sikorae in enclosures that measure 18 wide x 24 deep and 36 tall. my lineatus and giganteus are in 30 w x 24 d x 48 t enclosures.

Thankyou very much for replying!! Of the smaller species, pietschmanni interest me most, however you don't often see those advertised. Would you they the pietschmanni are suitable as a starter uroplatus? are they reasonably hardy?

do you get your larger glass vivs custom made or where do you get them? I'd have no problem getting a larger viv to house Henkeli so long as i can get one that allows front access like the exoterras do.

hey art _gecko :) good to see you on here too! 8)

you are definately in the best place to ask.

Henkeli and Guentheri are definately favourites for starter Uroplatus, and I am sure you have read up enough to understand why.
As for the viv size... I always find it hard to estimate how much space a gecko needs unless I can seeit in the flesh or in a photo next to a hand ( I think I must be retarded with measurements) but i think that the big size of exo terra 45x60x45 (i think?) would be a decent size for henkeli or Guentheri.

Thanks for the photos Gollum you have beautiful animals!! Is there generally much colour variation in Guentheri?

Hi Graham, yea this forum is very good, ive been registered for ages but dont tend to post often, mostly just read. This one and the Naultinus forums are my usual haunts! The viv size is all thats really puzzling me, as ive been told by alot of people that Henkeli need more height than is currently offered by exoterra. I'm just hoping that they'll release a new larger arboreal size, as theyve started making 3ft terrestrial ones now, just not vertical! As soon as they release them and i have the money ill be upgrading all of my vivs to larger i hope.
