Holodactylus africanus from Romania

Hello all,

My name is Alin, I`m from Romania - Europe.
I just wanted to present you my gecko - Holodactylus africanus - he`s name is Maximus. I have him since 1 month, and he`s doing fine.
He will get on saturday a girlfriend.

Here he is:

What kind of substrate has he ?
Mine has sand and peat underneath, but sand as a majority, how is he doing with only peat (it seems like peat) ?

Hello Lyleina,

It is:
JBL Terra Coco Humus - Natural coconut humus in compressed form.
It can absorb water and hold the humidity more. I`m giving water every 2-3 days to the substrate. The shop where I buyed the Holodactylus had the same for some months for them, they found even egs from them.

Maximus is happy with the substrate and is digging all the time. It has rocks to use for his claws, and a worm recipient. I don`t give water to my gecko. He is licking the water from the walls and plants. Perhaps you can`t see it in the pics, but he is fat like a pig.

For the substrate I payed 3 euro, and I used for the terrarium just half of the "brick".
I don`t recomand to use sand with a water dish and some lights...because they burrow and can easy turn the water in the substrate, and have the sands on their bodys...with the incandescent light together, you can figure yourself what can happen`.

[Sorry for my english, I hope I could help you]

What are you giving to your holodactylus to eat? and, what kind of vitamins...calcium stuff [you understand] are you using?

I use to give him house crikets and sometimes worms (greater wax moth) and ****roaches (when he accept them !).
For vitamins I use Reptivit, I put it on the insects every two weeks and for the calcium he had always in his terrarium (enclosure) a little receptacle with calcium in powder, but I'm not sure he goes licking in it.

I understand the problem with the sand with the water dish and the incandescent light, but mine never get out durring day-time so he never has been enlighted directly.

But your housing settings are realy intersting, and if you can, I would be happy to have some news from you about your geckos. The adaptation in captivity of this species is often hard, and if the way you do works good too, it would be usefull for me and for all the breeders ;-)

Hey Lyleina,

I have my gecko just for 1 month...and as other reptiles I just have one Pantherophis Guttatus [Corn snake  ]

The gecko`s name is Maximus, he lives in a tank with measurements...let`s say 30 cm x 30 cm x 28 cm . The terrarium I made by myself and with some collegues, and it looked like this, before the gecko came:

but this are ,,old,, pictures, it looks a little bit different now.

The light is turned on only 3-4 minutes per week. Just to see for him. The pictures I made with the flash from the camera.

He doesn`t have light at all, no water ball and no calcium, or other stuff...that` s why I asked you. I will buy something on saturday, but just to mix it with the worms. I only feed him with this:

that I breed by myself. [it`s very easy]

I already said that I don`t give him water, he is licking the drops from the wall and the plastic flowers.
He will get a girl on saturday, if I manage to go in a city nearby.
Than I hope to breed them. They will come in a 80 cm long terrarium, and will have like 15 cm substrate [they like to have like 15-20 cm] so they can ,,play,, all day.
Next week I will be in the Czech Republic with some business from the company where I`m working, so just on friday I can tell more about the new couple. :) I only now that the name from the gecko female will be Desdemona.

.

I forgot to say, that for having the substrate warm, I have a Exo-terra heat-pad, Rainforest small, and it`s doing its job great.

Another thing: The gecko is eating 1-2 worm per night. I can here him at 5-6 AM ,,hunting,, in the tank. :coverlaugh:

When I will have some pictures from the new tank, I will post it here, that will be in 2 weeks I hope.
