Female Aggressin Toward Males?

While at a reptile show yesterday, I bought 2 adult crested geckos -- a male and a female (from the same breeder). After getting home, I placed them into a 55-gallon tank and observed them. They approached each other and touched each other with the tips of their noses, but there were no signs of aggression. When I awoke this morning, I found that the male's tail had been torn/bitten off.

Is this an abnormal thing to happen? What can I do to make this less likely to happen? I originally planned to keep the male and 3 females in the 55g tank, but I am now reconsidering it.

sometimes when the male is smaller than the female, the female will show aggression. also, you might want to put them in seperate tanks for about a week when you first get them, for quarantine purposes and so that they can adjust to being in a new environment.

Thanks for the reply. Does losing his tail affect the males ability to reproduce?
