And no, don't take the hides out. This will cause unneeded stress. They need places to go in and feel safe. If left in the open they can stress and that can cause a whole train of trouble.
Although you may not SEE him come out, that doesn't mean he never does. As I'm sure you already know Leos are nocturnal. They'll be more active at night so during the day, what you describe is actually normal for a Leo.
I personally have mine under a red lamp 24/7 so I can observe them at night. And yes, with most Leos (can't say all) you really can tell a difference in their activity between daylight and nighttime. I get home from work at 6 everyday and they know feeding time's around then so that's when they start to scurry about and wake up... It's cute. Then when the sun's barely peekin through my room at 6:30 in the morning you can tell that's the end of their "day" and they start dozing off... I have no idea what they do when I'm at work all day so you'll have to ask them. Probably partyin.
